Once home to the AGL gasworks and its workingmen's cottages, this small Parramatta River peninsula has changed character since the plant closed, but what's underground tells a longer story.

Surviving pre-1940 cottages sit close to townhouses and unit blocks built from the 1990s onward, once the old industrial site opened up for redevelopment.

The older stock, particularly around Tennyson Road and Hilly Street, typically drains through original earthenware pipe that's had a century to crack, shift and trap debris.

There's a second factor at play here that many nearby suburbs don't share.
